Forty Hours
"Macchina delle Quarant'Ore" in S. Maria dell'Orto on Holy Thursday 2009. The Forty Hours' devotion is an Eucharistic adoration which became very popular in the XVIth century; Gian Lorenzo Bernini and all the main Baroque architects designed "Macchine delle Quarant'Ore", i.e. elaborate and spectacular chandeliers which were lighted during the prayers. This year the ceremonies held in S. Maria dell'Orto with an old "macchina" were full of grief for the many victims of the earthquake at L'Aquila.
