This section was first developed in 1997; it was aimed at providing visitors with an opportunity to learn about the history of some monuments of Rome through the coats of arms and the heraldic symbols of the Popes which decorated them.
A selection of the finest coats of arms
The section is made up of the following pages:
Historical overview of the papal coats of arms
Coats of arms of the Middle Ages
Coats of arms of the Renaissance
Coats of arms of the Counter-Reformation period
Coats of arms of the Baroque period
Coats of arms of the long decadence of the Papal State
Chronological catalogue of the coats of arms of the popes
Alphabetical catalogue of the coats of arms of the popes
and an 1852 Map of Rome to locate the coats of arms of the popes.
You may wish to see also a section of this website showing 1711 drawings by Filippo Juvarra of some of the finest papal coats of arms.
The image used as background for this page shows the lantern of S. Ivo alla Sapienza, the design of which is based on papal heraldic symbols.
